Import Egyptian Loofah to the USA and Europe

Importing loofah from Egypt is a normal trade process, and most of it is paperwork. This post walks through the steps for a buyer in the USA or in Europe: what comes with the order, who handles what, how long the goods take to arrive, and what to ask your customs broker.

We are EGEXO For Export, a manufacturer and exporter of natural Egyptian loofah in Damanhour, Egypt. We have been exporting since 2015. Everything below is how we work with buyers today.

Step 1: Tell us what you need

Start with a quote request. Tell us the products, the quantities and the country of delivery. We reply to quote requests within 24 hours. There is no minimum order on standard products. Private label starts from 1,000 units.

If you want to see the loofah first, ask for samples. A sample order is up to 20 pieces per item. Samples are paid, and the buyer pays shipping. Standard samples ship within 2 days and custom samples within a week. The sample cost is credited to your first order of $1,000 or more, placed within 60 days.

Step 2: Agree the terms of delivery

Prices are in US dollars, EX-Works Damanhour. We can also quote CFR, CIF and DAP, by sea, air or express. FOB and DDP are available only on request.

The term you choose decides who does what at the destination. With CFR, for example, the buyer handles customs and delivery at the destination. Ask your customs broker which term suits you. Shipping from all Egyptian ports and airports is possible.

Step 3: Payment and lead time

Large orders: 50% advance payment and 50% before shipment, or an irrevocable confirmed L/C at sight against shipping documents. Samples and small orders: bank transfer or PayPal (the buyer covers the PayPal fee of 8%).

The lead time is 7 to 25 days from payment, depending on the quantity and the orders in process. Up to 5 pieces per product are ready in 2 days. Custom and private label orders take longer than standard products, and we confirm the time with the quote.

Step 4: Checks and packing

Every order is checked by hand for quality, size and dryness before packing. We always compress the loofah before shipping. Even compressed, loofah takes up a lot of space, so freight cost is a real part of your total cost. We will quote it clearly.

Step 5: The export papers

The papers depend on the shipment and the destination. For Europe, the usual set is a commercial invoice, a packing list, a Certificate of Origin or EUR.1, a Phytosanitary Certificate and a bill of lading. For the USA, we confirm the exact papers in your quote. EGEXO also holds an Export License.

Certificate of Origin or EUR.1: goes with every export order except express parcels. The EUR.1 is for Europe only.
Phytosanitary Certificate: a plant health paper that we hold and can provide.
Product details and declarations: we give buyers the details they need for their own customs entry.

We do whatever we can to help our clients with the papers we can offer and the information they need. This includes information for customs, and for France’s packaging recycling registration. Tell us what your broker or your importer of record asks for.

Duty and trade agreements

Europe and the United Kingdom

Egypt has an Association Agreement with the European Union and another with the United Kingdom. These agreements remove tariffs on industrial products, when the goods meet the origin rules and come with proof of origin. EU buyers may claim lower or zero duty with our origin papers; confirm with your customs broker. We have not confirmed the exact rate for loofah codes, so we do not quote one.

The USA

Egypt has no trade agreement with the USA. Do not plan on a lower duty because of the origin papers. Your customs broker will tell you the duty for your product code.

Product codes

Our customs broker has confirmed these codes. Raw loofah pieces use HS code 140490. Finished loofah articles use HS code 460219, which is 4602.19.8000 in the US tariff. Your own broker makes the final decision for your country, so ask them to check the codes for your products.

How long the goods take

These are our usual transit times. Sea freight in a full container takes 18 to 25 days to France and 25 to 30 days to the USA. Shared containers (LCL) take about 40 days to France and about 45 days to the USA. Air freight takes 2 to 3 days to the destination airport, for any country. Express door delivery takes 4 to 7 days. For other destinations, we confirm sea transit in your quote.

Lab tests

Lab tests are not part of our standard process. We do them only on request, and the buyer pays the cost. If your market needs a test, tell us before you order.

What your customs broker will ask

Product description and HS code for each item.
The commercial invoice and the packing list.
Proof of origin, such as the EUR.1 for Europe.
The Phytosanitary Certificate, if your country asks for it.
The bill of lading or the air waybill.

Can I order a small first shipment?

Yes. There is no minimum order on standard products. Many buyers start with samples, then place a first order. Samples and small orders go by express, which takes 4 to 7 days for door delivery. Express parcels are quoted for you, and each carton is its own shipment.

Which products ship most often?

Buyers order body sponges in oval, rectangle and round shapes, exfoliating gloves and mitts, back scrubbers, makeup remover pads, kitchen pads and raw loofah. The towels, edges, ropes and back straps on our products are 100% cotton. If you cannot find what you need, we make it to your design, as a custom order.

Who pays for freight?

It depends on the term you choose. The cost depends on the term you choose, the size of the order and the route. Because loofah is bulky even when compressed, we suggest you ask for the freight cost in your first quote request, so the full cost is clear before you decide.

Can I visit?

Buyer visits to EGEXO are welcome, if arranged in advance. Video calls are offered after the first order is confirmed.
